About Sophia

Sophia Huf is a bass trombonist hailing from Minnesota. Proficient in a multitude of musical genres, they have performed in many places and ensembles in orchestral, jazz, chamber, and opera settings. These include Minnesota Orchestra Hall, the Northern Lights Music Festival, the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, Icehouse in Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra.

Sophia is an outspoken advocate for female and queer participation in the brass community, having performed in drag on multiple occasions for queer audiences and recently acting as copyist with Breaking the Binary Theatre in a new musical workshop. They also have a passion for providing accessible music education to youth in rural areas, having participated in coaching, masterclasses, and private instruction in northern Minnesota and rural Wisconsin.

Alongside education, Sophia enjoys performing solo and chamber recitals, having performed with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra double brass quintet as well as multiple solo recitals, performing selections by composers including David Gillingham, Elizabeth Raum, Frigyes Hidas, Michael Davis, and more. They’ve also commissioned custom works for trombone quartet and unaccompanied bass trombone.

Sophia holds a bachelors of music performance from University of Minnesota Duluth. They are currently pursuing a masters in music performance at Montclair State University, taught by many experts including Derek Bromme, Jennifer Wharton, Weston Sprott, John Rojak, and Reginald Chapman Jr.
